EDITORS COMMENTS
Alfonso X, called 'The Wise' (1221-1284): Cantigas de Santa Maria (Virgin Mary Songs), MS T.I. 1. Codex Rico, Cantiga 63. Fol. 92R. This exquisite detail from the 13th-century manuscript showcases a pivotal moment in the Battle of San Esteban de Gormaz, where the Virgin Mary intervenes to save a knight from certain death. The knight, identified as Count Don García Fernández (938-995), Lord of Castile, is depicted leading his army in defense of the city against the attack of Almanzor. The Cantigas de Santa Maria, a collection of 420 poems and accompanying music, was commissioned by Alfonso X to honor the Virgin Mary and seek her intercession. The manuscript, now housed in the Royal Library of the Monastery of El Escorial in Spain, is a testament to the rich artistic and literary heritage of the Middle Ages. The intricate Gothic miniature painting showcases the knight's determination and the Virgin's divine intervention, highlighting the deep faith and devotion of the time. Alfonso X, also known as Alfonso the Wise, was a significant figure in Spanish history, ruling as king from 1252 to 1284. He was a patron of the arts, sciences, and learning, and his reign marked a period of cultural and intellectual flourishing in Spain. The Cantigas de Santa Maria, with its beautiful illustrations and moving verses, is a testament to Alfonso's commitment to preserving and promoting the arts and his deep reverence for the Virgin Mary.
