1580 Arundel Countess Dacre Depicted Flourished Howard Philip Surrey Years

EDITORS COMMENTS
Ann Dacre, Countess of Arundel and Surrey, is depicted in this striking portrait as a regal and elegant figure in her advanced years. Born in 1562 as the daughter of Francis Dacre, 14th Baron Dacre, Ann's life was marked by significant historical events and political intrigue. At the age of 15, she was married to Thomas Sackville, 1st Earl of Dorset, a marriage arranged by Queen Elizabeth I to secure Sackville's support in her ongoing power struggle with her half-sister, Catherine Grey. The marriage was unhappy, and Ann was later involved in a scandalous affair with Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, which led to her divorce from Sackville in 1596. In 1595, Ann married Philip Howard, 1st Earl of Arundel and Surrey, a union that brought her significant wealth and influence. The couple's court was known for its patronage of the arts, attracting notable figures such as Ben Jonson, Inigo Jones, and John Donne. Ann's later years were marked by tragedy. Her husband was implicated in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 and was executed in 1614. Ann herself died in 1618, leaving behind a legacy as a powerful and influential figure in Elizabethan England. This portrait, taken when Ann was 69 years old, captures the countess's enduring beauty and grace, despite her advanced age. Her striking features, elegant attire, and regal posture attest to her status as a woman of great wealth and influence in a time of political upheaval and artistic innovation.
