EDITORS COMMENTS
This hauntingly beautiful copper print depicts the moment of the assassination of King Gustaf III of Sweden at the Stockholm Opera on April 27, 1792. The image captures the shock and chaos that ensued as the king, who was known for his love of the arts and his patronage of the opera, was fatally wounded by gunshot during a performance. King Gustaf III, who ruled Sweden from 1771 until his death, was a complex and enigmatic figure. He was a military leader who expanded Sweden's territories, a patron of the arts, and a reformer who sought to modernize the country. However, his authoritarian rule and attempts to centralize power made him many enemies. On this fateful night, as Gustaf III attended a performance of the opera "The Marriage of Figaro," he was approached by a masked assassin, Jacob Johan Anckarström. The assassin fired a shot at the king from close range, and Gustaf III fell to the ground, mortally wounded. He was taken to the royal palace, where he died the following day. This print, created in Norway, captures the moment of the assassination with striking detail and emotion. The king is shown slumping forward in his seat, his face contorted in pain and shock, while those around him react with horror and disbelief. The opera house, once a place of beauty and joy, is now a scene of violence and chaos. The assassination of King Gustaf III was a turning point in Swedish history, and this print serves as a poignant reminder of the unexpected and often tragic nature of power and politics. The image has been passed down through the centuries, a testament to the enduring fascination with this pivotal moment in Swedish history.
