Plate 43" from British Mammals Vol. 1 & 2 by Archibald Thorburn: A Stunning 19th Century Illustration of Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus) and Fin Whale (Balaenoptera physalus) This exquisite illustration, titled "Plate 43," is taken from the two-volume set "British Mammals" by renowned Scottish naturalist artist Archibald Thorburn, published between 1920 and 1921. The illustration showcases two magnificent marine mammals, the Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus) and the Fin Whale (Balaenoptera physalus), both belonging to the Balaenopteridae family, also known as the rorquals or baleen whales. The Blue Whale, the largest animal ever known to have existed, is depicted on the left side of the plate. Its enormous body, reaching up to 100 feet in length, is shown gracefully gliding through the water, its massive blue-gray back blending seamlessly with the ocean depths. The Blue Whale is a filter feeder, using its baleen plates to strain krill and other small organisms from the water. This endangered species was once hunted to near extinction for its oil and baleen, but conservation efforts have helped its population recover, although it remains a vulnerable species. On the right side of the plate, the Fin Whale, the second-largest mammal on Earth, is depicted with its long, slender body and distinctive fin, which can be up to 10 feet tall. The Fin Whale is a fast-swimming, deep-diving predator that feeds primarily on krill and small fish. This common rorqual is also an endangered species, with populations still recovering from commercial whaling. This stunning illustration, created during the early 20th century, captures the beauty and majesty of these two magnificent creatures in their natural aquatic habitat. Archibald Thorburn's masterful artwork continues to inspire appreciation for the natural world and serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect endangered species like the Blue Whale and Fin Whale.
