EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 21 from Ferdinand Lucas Bauer's zoological watercolours and drawings, depicts the Australian Ringneck, or Barnardius zonarius, a native parakeet of Australia. This exquisite illustration was observed and documented during Captain Matthew Flinders' circumnavigational survey of Australia aboard the Investigator between 1801 and 1803. The Australian Ringneck is a striking bird, with its vibrant blue and green plumage, distinctive red beak, and most notably, the distinctive collar of yellow feathers encircling its neck. This collar is what gave the bird its alternative name, "Bauer's Parakeet," in honor of the skilled artist, Ferdinand Lucas Bauer, who so accurately captured its likeness. The bird is depicted perched on a branch, with its head tilted to one side, revealing the intricate details of its anatomy. The feathers on its head are ruffled, giving the impression of alertness and curiosity. The Australian Ringneck is native to Australia and New Guinea, and is a member of the Psittaculidae family, which includes other well-known parakeets such as the Rose-ringed Parakeet and the Budgerigar. Ferdinand Lucas Bauer (1774-1814) was a German natural history artist who accompanied Flinders on his voyage around Australia. His detailed and accurate illustrations of the animals and birds they encountered were a significant contribution to the scientific record of the region. This illustration, in particular, is a testament to Bauer's skill and attention to detail, providing a glimpse into the natural history of Australia during the 18th century.
