EDITORS COMMENTS
Francois de Vendome, Duc de Beaufort: A Regal Naval Commander in 17th Century France Francois de Vendome, Duc de Beaufort (1616-1669), was a prominent French admiral of the 17th century, renowned for his military prowess and noble lineage. Born to Cesare de Vendome and the grandson of Henri IV, King of France, Beaufort's birthright placed him among the highest echelons of French society. This striking image captures the duc de Beaufort in full armor, a testament to his military readiness and commitment to defending the French crown. The intricate details of his armor, adorned with the fleur-de-lis emblem, reflect the opulence and grandeur of the French monarchy during this period. Beaufort's naval career began in 1638, when he was appointed as a captain in the French navy. He quickly rose through the ranks, earning a reputation as a skilled and successful commander. In 1653, he was appointed as the governor of Rochefort, a key French naval base, and later became the admiral of the Atlantic fleet in 1657. Throughout his career, Beaufort played a crucial role in several significant naval battles against the Spanish and English. His most notable victory came in 1658, when he led a successful attack on the English fleet off the coast of Dunkirk. This victory helped to secure French dominance in the North Sea and solidified Beaufort's reputation as a formidable naval commander. Despite his military successes, Beaufort's personal life was marked by tragedy. He lost his first wife, Anne de Montafaucon, in childbirth, and his second wife, Charlotte de La Trémoille, died just a few months after their marriage. Beaufort himself passed away in 1669, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most accomplished French admirals of the 17th century.
