EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting photograph, Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich of Russia (1876-1938) is captured in a tender moment with his eldest daughter, Marie (1907-1951). The Grand Duke, the third son of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich and Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Russia, is dressed in a formal suit, his piercing blue eyes gazing lovingly at his young daughter. Marie, with her striking resemblance to her grandmother, Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, is dressed in a beautiful white dress adorned with lace and a matching bow in her hair. The photograph, taken in the early 1910s, offers a glimpse into the intimate family life of the Russian royal family before the turmoil of the Russian Revolution. Grand Duke Kirill and his wife, Princess Victoria Melita of Edinburgh, were married in 1896 in a highly controversial union, as Victoria was the divorced wife of Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse and by Rhine. Their unconventional marriage and the birth of their three children, Marie, Konstantin, and Xenia, brought renewed interest and controversy to the Russian imperial court. Despite the challenges they faced, the family remained close, and this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of their love and bond. Marie, who would later marry Prince George, Duke of Kent, and become the grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II, is seen here as a carefree and happy child, her smile reflecting the joy and contentment she felt in her father's embrace. The photograph is a testament to the enduring love between a father and his daughter and the strength and resilience of the Russian imperial family in the face of adversity.
