The Holy Island of Lindisfarne - Crossing the Sands by cart

Crossing the Sands by cart (nearly too late!) from the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, Northumberland, England - a tidal island off the northeast coast of England with a recorded history from the 6th century. An important centre of Celtic Christianity under Saints Aidan of Lindisfarne, Cuthbert, Eadfrith of Lindisfarne and Eadberht of Lindisfarne. After Viking invasions (and the Norman conquest of England) a priory was re-established. A small castle was also built on the island in 1550. Date: circa 1941

Celtic Driver Jul16 Lindisfarne Northumberland Priory Returning Rising Tidal Tide Transporting Wagon

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, we witness the thrilling moment of crossing the treacherous sands of the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island or Lindesfarne, located off the northeast coast of England. The island, with a recorded history dating back to the 6th century, has been an important center of Celtic Christianity, with Saints Aidan of Lindisfarne, Cuthbert, Eadfrith of Lindisfarne, and Eadberht of Lindisfarne having significant roles in its religious history. The scene depicts a horse-drawn cart, its driver intently focused on the task at hand as the rising tide threatens to engulf the sands. The island is tidal, meaning it is only accessible on foot or by cart during certain hours, and the driver seems to be racing against time to make it back before the water becomes too deep. The vast expanse of water in the background, with the ominous clouds looming overhead, adds to the sense of urgency and adventure. Lindisfarne, which has seen Viking invasions and the Norman conquest of England, is home to a priory and a small castle, both of which have played crucial roles in the island's rich history. This photograph, taken circa 1941, captures the raw beauty and historical significance of the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, a place where the past and the present converge in a breathtaking display of nature's power and human resilience.
