Attack Clad Darling Fort Galena Iron
EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful image captures the aftermath of the Union victory in the Battle of Fort Darling, fought on the James River in Virginia during the American Civil War in 1862. The US ironclad Galena, under the command of Lieutenant Commander John Marston, engaged the Confederate fortification and its defending artillery batteries on March 8, 1862. The photograph shows the deck of the Galena, displaying the battle scars inflicted by Confederate cannon fire. The most notable damage is evident in the smokestack, which bears several large holes. The Galena's ironclad armor, designed to protect against enemy projectiles, proved effective during the engagement, as the ship managed to withstand numerous hits and emerge victorious. The Battle of Fort Darling marked a significant turning point in the Union's efforts to control the James River and secure a strategic advantage in the ongoing conflict. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the intense battles and sacrifices made during the American Civil War.
