1. Title: A Visionary Bishop: James Prince Lee of Manchester (1804-1869) James Prince Lee (1804-1869), a man of deep faith and profound vision, is depicted in this evocative photograph taken during his tenure as Bishop of Manchester. Born on March 12, 1804, in the quaint village of Hackney, London, Lee's calling to the priesthood was evident from an early age. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and ordained a deacon in 1827 and a priest in 1828. Lee's career as a clergyman began in earnest, and he quickly gained a reputation for his pastoral care and dedication to his flock. In 1843, he was appointed Bishop of Manchester, a position he held until his death in 1869. During his time in Manchester, Lee oversaw the expansion of the diocese and the construction of numerous churches and schools. A man of great compassion, Lee was deeply committed to the welfare of the working class, particularly the children of Manchester. He established the Manchester Diocesan Schools Society, which provided education for over 10,000 children in the diocese. Lee also founded the Manchester Diocesan Orphanage, which cared for over 200 children. Lee's vision extended beyond Manchester. He was a strong advocate for the abolition of slavery and played a key role in the establishment of the Church's West Indies Mission. He also supported the Oxford Movement, which sought to re-establish the traditions and rituals of the early Christian Church. Despite his many accomplishments, Lee remained humble and dedicated to his faith. He was known for his kindness, generosity, and his ability to connect with people of all walks of life. This photograph, taken during his later years, captures the wisdom and serenity that marked Lee's life and ministry. James Prince Lee's legacy continues to inspire generations of Anglicans in Manchester and beyond. His vision, compassion, and commitment to the welfare of his people remain an enduring testament to his faith and his leadership.
