Deer Fujiwara Kasuga Nara Prefecture Shinto Shrine Taisha Kasuga Taisha

EDITORS COMMENTS
Kurumayadori, or the Kuruma-yadori, is the sacred deer forest of Kasuga Taisha, one of the most famous and historic Shinto shrines in Japan. Located in Nara Prefecture, the shrine is dedicated to the deity Kasuga Okina and is renowned for its beautiful grounds filled with over 1,200 sacred deer. The deer have been considered sacred animals since ancient times and are believed to be the messengers of the gods. In this photograph taken circa 1908, we see a serene scene of the deer forest at Kasuga Taisha. The forest is lush and green, with numerous deer grazing peacefully among the trees. The forest is surrounded by the ornate architecture of the shrine, including the impressive torii gates and the elegant buildings adorned with intricate carvings. Kasuga Taisha is also known as the Kasuga Grand Shrine and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was originally built in 768 AD by the Fujiwara family, who were powerful nobles during the Heian period. The shrine has undergone numerous renovations and expansions over the centuries, but it remains an important spiritual and cultural site for the people of Japan and visitors from around the world. The photograph captures the harmony between nature and spirituality that is central to Shintoism. The deer, the forest, and the shrine all exist in a delicate balance, creating a sacred space where people can connect with the divine. The image is a testament to the enduring beauty and significance of Kasuga Taisha and the rich history of Shintoism in Japan.
