EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases two exquisite starfish species, Labidiaster annulatus and Labidiaster radiosus, as illustrated in the report of the HMS Challenger Voyage (1872-1876). The Challenger Voyage was a groundbreaking scientific expedition sponsored by the Royal Navy and led by Sir Charles Wyville Thomson, with contributions from renowned scientist Alfred Russell Wallace. The voyage aimed to explore the world's oceans and advance knowledge of marine biology, geology, and physics. The Labidiaster annulatus, also known as the Annulated Starfish or the Ringed Starfish, is depicted on the left side of the print. This starfish is characterized by its five arms, which are adorned with numerous small tubercles and short, radiating spines. The annulated starfish is native to the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans and feeds primarily on mussels and other bivalves. On the right side of the print lies the Labidiaster radiosus, or the Radiatus Starfish. This starfish boasts a more elongated body and longer, slender arms, which are covered in small, radiating spines. The radiatus starfish is found in the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans and feeds on various invertebrates, including sponges, bryozoans, and mollusks. This stunning illustration, produced during the Challenger Voyage, offers a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the marine world that was discovered during this influential expedition. The intricate details of these starfish species, captured through the skillful hand of the illustrator, serve as a testament to the scientific curiosity and exploration that characterized the HMS Challenger Voyage.
