EDITORS COMMENTS
In this vintage photograph, a GLC-LFB Dennis Dennis Fire Engine with the model designation of Compact Pump is showcased. This particular firefighting vehicle was introduced into the London Fire Brigade (LFB) fleet during the 1970s. Unlike many of its contemporary fire engines, this compact pump was not a dual-purpose vehicle. It was specifically designed for firefighting duties, but could only carry an extension ladder, making it unsuitable for transporting the 50-foot wheeled escape. The narrow wheelbase of this Dennis diesel engine added to its compact design, enabling it to maneuver more easily in the congested streets of London. However, its limited capabilities meant that only two of these vehicles were purchased by the LFB for evaluation purposes. Unfortunately, the evaluation did not result in a wider introduction of this model into the LFB fleet. The red diesel engine, with its distinctive front grille and hose reels, is a testament to the evolution of firefighting vehicles during the 1970s. The Compact Pump represents an experiment in design, showcasing the balance between the need for maneuverability in urban environments and the requirements of effective firefighting equipment. Despite its shortcomings, this Dennis Compact Pump remains an intriguing piece of firefighting history, reflecting the ongoing efforts to improve the efficiency and capabilities of fire engines.
