Lord Shaftesbury: A Reforming Statesman of the Victorian Era This evocative photograph captures the distinguished visage of Anthony Ashley-Cooper, the seventh Earl of Shaftesbury (1801-1885). Widely regarded as one of the most influential and visionary political figures of the Victorian era, Shaftesbury dedicated his life to social reform and humanitarian causes. Born into the aristocracy, Shaftesbury's upbringing and education set him apart from many of his contemporaries. He was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, and later traveled extensively in Europe, where he was exposed to the Enlightenment ideas that would shape his political philosophy.
