Louis XVI (1754-1793): A Monarch in Weighty Splendor This striking image captures the regal presence of King Louis XVI of France, dressed in his most formal attire, as depicted in the portrait by Jean-Baptiste Greuze's student, Jean-Baptiste Duval, between 1754 and 1793. The King's serious expression and the richness of his court dress underscore the weighty responsibilities and solemnity of the monarchy during the Ancien Régime in France. Louis XVI ascended to the throne in 1774, following the death of his grandfather, Louis XV. In this portrait, the young king is shown in his smartest and most formal attire, which included a long, voluminous red velvet robe lined with ermine fur, a white lace cravat, and a three-cornered hat adorned with a white plume.
