EDITORS COMMENTS
Mary Catherine Bolton, later known as Lady Mary Thurlow, was a prominent English actress of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in London around 1760, she made her theatrical debut at the Drury Lane Theatre in 1778, at the tender age of eighteen. Her acting abilities quickly gained her recognition and acclaim, and she went on to perform in various theatres across London, including the Covent Garden Theatre and the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. In 1790, Mary Catherine married Edward Thurlow, who was later created a baronet in 1796 and a baron in 1802. Edward Thurlow was a prominent politician and judge, serving as Solicitor General and Attorney General under Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger. The couple's marriage brought Mary Catherine into the upper echelons of English society, and she became a popular figure at court and in high society circles. Despite her newfound social status, Mary Catherine continued to act, appearing in various productions throughout the 1790s and 1800s. Her most notable role during this period was as Lady Macbeth in a production of "Macbeth" at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, in 1794. Her performance was widely praised by critics and audiences alike, and it cemented her reputation as one of the finest actresses of her generation. Mary Catherine's acting career came to an end in the early 1830s, and she spent her final years in retirement with her husband at their estate in Wiltshire. She passed away in 1837, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most talented and influential actresses of her time. This portrait, believed to have been taken around 1790, captures Mary Catherine in her prime, with her striking features and expressive eyes that no doubt captivated audiences both on and off the stage.
