Mrs Patrick Campbell & Lady Randolph Churchill
An interesting photograph showing the acclaimed stage beauty, Mrs Patrick Campbell (1865-1940), born Beatrice Stellar Tanner (pictured centre), in the same photograph as Mrs George Cornwallis-West (Lady Randolph Churchill, formerly Jennie Jerome, mother of Winston Churchill). Lady Randolph married George Cornwallis-West, a man twenty years her junior, in 1900. George began an affair with Mrs Pat around 1909 and he and Jennie separated in 1912. She reverted to her old title of Lady Randolph Churchill and later married Montagu Porch. Picture shows the cast of His Borrowed Plumes, a comedy play written by Jennie. Left to right top row, Miss Winifred Emery, Mr Henry Ainley, Mr Dawson Milward, Miss Stella Patrick-Campbell and seated Miss Annie Hughes and Lady Randolph Churchill. Date: 1914

EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing photograph captures two prominent figures of the Edwardian era, Mrs Patrick Campbell (Beatrice Stellar Tanner, center) and Lady Randolph Churchill (Jennie Jerome, formerly Lady Randolph Churchill, right), in an unexpected setting. Taken in 1914, the image showcases the cast of Lady Randolph's comedy play, "His Borrowed Plumes." Mrs Patrick Campbell, a celebrated stage beauty, had a storied career in theatre, while Lady Randolph, known for her beauty and social connections, was the mother of Sir Winston Churchill. In 1900, Lady Randolph married George Cornwallis-West, a man twenty years her junior. However, by 1909, George had begun an affair with Mrs Patrick Campbell, leading to the separation of Lady Randolph and George in 1912. Lady Randolph reverted to her old title and later married Montagu Porch. The photograph features several other notable actors of the time, including Winifred Emery, Henry Ainley, Dawson Milward, and Annie Hughes. The cast is arranged in two rows, with the women seated and the men standing. The play, "His Borrowed Plumes," was a significant production for Lady Randolph, who wrote the script herself. The image offers a glimpse into the complex web of relationships and societal norms of the Edwardian era, where personal scandals and public performances intertwined. The photograph is a fascinating reminder of a time when the personal lives of the rich and famous were as much a part of the public discourse as their artistic pursuits.
