EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is a print from LS Plate 74 of the John Reeves Collection of Zoological Drawings from Canton, China, dating back to the nineteenth century. The subject of this remarkable illustration is the Varecia variegata, also known as the black and white ruffed lemur, a native mammal of Madagascar. John Reeves (1774-1856), a British surgeon and naturalist, created this detailed and lifelike drawing during his time in China, where he served as the British Factory Surgeon in Canton from 1805 to 1812. Reeves was an avid collector of natural history specimens and made numerous drawings of various animals, including this intriguing lemur. The Varecia variegata is a primate belonging to the Lemuridae family, which is part of the larger group of Lemuroidea. This placental mammal is characterized by its bushy, black and white ruff around its face, long, fluffy tail, and distinctive black and white fur pattern. The ruffed lemur is a diurnal primate, meaning it is active during the day, and is an important seed disperser in its native habitat. This drawing provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of the Varecia variegata during the nineteenth century, a time when European explorers and naturalists were making significant discoveries and documenting new species from around the world. The intricate details and lifelike quality of the illustration attest to Reeves' skill as a natural history artist and his dedication to documenting the natural world.
