EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts the Clove spice, scientifically known as Syzygium aromaticum (previously known as Eugenia aromatica or Caryophyllus aromaticus), a flowering evergreen tree in the Myrtaceae family. Native to the Maluku Islands in Indonesia, cloves have been used for centuries for their distinct aromatic and pungent flavor in various culinary and medicinal applications. The engraving showcases the clove buds, which are the part of the plant harvested for commercial use. The buds are harvested before they fully open and are typically dried under the sun or over a fire to enhance their flavor and aroma. The buds are small, round, and have a distinctive shape with a central stem and four sepals that form a star-like structure around the unopened flower. Clove spice has a long history of medicinal use, dating back to ancient times. It was used in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine to treat various ailments, including digestive issues, respiratory problems, and dental pain. In Europe, cloves were used as a preservative and to mask unpleasant odors. This engraving is from Dr. Willibald Artus' Hand-Atlas sammtlicher mediinisch-pharmaceutischer Gewachse, or Handbook of all medical-pharmaceutical plants, published in Jena, Germany, in 1876. The atlas was a comprehensive reference work that contained detailed illustrations and descriptions of over 1,500 medicinal plants. This particular engraving highlights the botanical accuracy and artistic detail that was typical of the hand-colored copperplate engravings produced during this period.
