Amidst the tumultuous waves of the North Sea, a weary British soldier, clad in his khaki uniform and armed with a rifle and bayonet, leans over the side of the ship's deck, his face a picture of sickly pallor and despair. The rough seas, a common companion to soldiers during World War I, have once again claimed their toll on this unfortunate soldier, leaving him queasy and longing for the comforts of home. The humor in this comic postcard, created circa 1918, comes from the exaggerated expression of the soldier's discomfort and the contrast between the harsh realities of wartime and the lightheartedness of the medium. The soldier's backpack, filled with essentials for the battlefield, lies abandoned at his feet, a reminder of the duties that await him once he recovers from his bout of seasickness.
