This exquisite entomological plate, dated between 1824 and 1839, features Curtis' description of Lasioglossum tricingulum, also known as the long-tongued Melitta or Halictus xanthopus. The image illustrates a bee species with distinctive yellow markings, which was originally described by Curtis under the genus Lasioglossum. However, subsequent taxonomic revisions by Fitton and colleagues in the late 20th century referred to this species as Lasioglossum xanthopum, following an earlier description by Kirby. More recently, it has been transferred to the genus Halictus. The bee is depicted perched on the leaves of Plantago lanceolata, commonly known as ribwort plantain. The plant's ribbed, lanceolate leaves and tall spike of small, green flowers provide a striking contrast to the bee's vibrant yellow and black markings. The bee's elongated tongue, a characteristic feature of the Lasioglossum and Halictus genera, is clearly visible in the illustration.
