EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Andrea Bernieri for Giulio Ferrrario's "Costumes Antique and Modern of All Peoples" published in Florence in 1843, offers a fascinating glimpse into the mythology and religious practices of ancient Egypt. The image showcases three prominent Egyptian deities: Apis (1), the bull god; Ailuros (2, 4), the cat god; and Anubis (3, 5, 6), the jackal god. Apis, represented here with the body of a bull and the horns of a ram, was revered as a manifestation of the divine force Ptah and was believed to be the physical embodiment of the god Osiris. The Apis Bull was considered a sacred animal, and its death and mummification were mourned as the passing of a deity. Ailuros, or Bastet, was the goddess of home, fertility, and childbirth, as well as the protector of the pharaoh. She was often depicted as a woman with the head of a cat or a cat sitting on a throne. In this engraving, we see Ailuros in her feline form, sitting regally on a throne adorned with lotus flowers. Anubis, the jackal-headed god, was the god of mummification and the afterlife. He was believed to guide the deceased through the underworld and help them reach Osiris, the god of the dead. Anubis is shown here in three different forms, each holding symbols of his role as the god of mummification and the afterlife: an embalming knife, ankh (the symbol of life), and an offering table. This engraving not only showcases the artistic skill of Andrea Bernieri but also offers valuable insights into the rich cultural heritage of ancient Egypt, providing a window into their beliefs, customs, and traditions.
