EDITORS COMMENTS
Elaine of Astolat, a tragic figure in Arthurian legend, is depicted in this beautiful 1914 print by Frances Brundage. Elaine is best known for her unrequited love for Sir Lancelot, a knight of King Arthur's Round Table. Her heart-wrenching story has been immortalized in various literary works, most notably in Sir Thomas Malory's "Le Morte d'Arthur" and Alfred, Lord Tennyson's "Idylls of the King" and the poem "The Lady of Shalott." In the legend, Elaine is a beautiful maiden from Astolat who falls deeply in love with Sir Lancelot upon seeing him pass by her father's castle. She waits for him to return, but he is unaware of her affections. Desperate to be with him, Elaine follows Lancelot to the tournament at Camelot, where she watches him from a distance. Tragically, Elaine becomes pregnant with Lancelot's child, but she is unable to reveal her love to him. She dies giving birth to their son, Galahad, who goes on to become one of the greatest knights of the Round Table. Elaine's death is a poignant reminder of the power of unrequited love and the consequences it can have. Frances Brundage's print captures the essence of Elaine's story, with the young woman gazing wistfully at a distant Lancelot, her heart heavy with longing. The muted colors and intricate details of the artwork transport us to the magical world of Arthurian legend, where love and tragedy intertwine.
