EDITORS COMMENTS
This copperplate engraving, created as an afterpiece to Thomas Rowlandson's illustration in Domenico Angelo's The School of Fencing published in London in 1787, portrays a thrilling moment in the art of swordplay between two elegant gentlemen fencers. The scene unfolds after the Carte parry, a defensive maneuver named after its inventor, Maestro di Scherma, Maestro Giuseppe Carlevaro. The first fencer, poised and ready, has executed the Carte parry, deflecting his opponent's thrust with his left hand and counter-thrusting with his right. The second fencer, caught off-guard, is in the process of executing a parade, a feinting move designed to deceive his opponent and regain the initiative. Both fencers wear the fashionable attire of the late 18th century, complete with breeches, waistcoats, and cravats. The intricate details of the engraving show the fencers' focused expressions, the precise angles of their swords, and the delicate folds of their clothing. The composition of the image invites the viewer to imagine the clash of steel and the exchange of skill and strategy between these two masters of the art of fencing. Thomas Rowlandson, a renowned English artist and caricaturist, created the original illustration for Domenico Angelo's influential fencing manual. The copperplate engraving, produced as an afterpiece, further highlights the beauty and elegance of the sport, as well as the skill and finesse required to master it.
