EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed hand-colored steel engraving depicts the Green-backed Becard, Pachyramphus viridis (previously known as Cuvier's Thick-bill, Pachyrhynchus cuvierii), a vibrant and intriguing bird species native to Central and South America. The image was created by renowned Scottish engraver William Lizars, based on an illustration by the esteemed English naturalist and artist William Swainson. The engraving is taken from Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Ornithology, specifically the volume dedicated to Flycatchers, published in Edinburgh by W.H. Lizars in 1836. The Green-backed Becard is a medium-sized bird, measuring around 15 cm in length, with a distinctive appearance. The male sports a bright green back and rump, a black head and neck, and a thick, curved beak. The female, on the other hand, has a more subdued coloration, with a brown back and a paler face. This bird is a resident of humid forests and forest edges, and its diet consists mainly of insects and other small invertebrates. The Green-backed Becard was a popular subject for naturalists and collectors during the 19th century, and this engraving is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and artistic skill of the time. The intricate feather patterns, lifelike posture, and vivid colors captured in this print make it a valuable addition to any collection of natural history art.
