EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts Gulanchi, or Tinospora sinensis, also known as Tinospora cordifolia. The botanical illustration was created by David Blair and later lithographed by Hanhart for inclusion in Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's "Medicinal Plants" published in London in 1880. Gulanchi is a traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicinal plant, native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. The plant is characterized by its climbing or trailing stems, heart-shaped leaves, and small, white or pink flowers. The roots and stems of the plant are used in traditional medicine for various ailments, including fever, diarrhea, and as a blood purifier. The intricate detail in this botanical illustration highlights the unique features of the plant, making it an invaluable resource for both scientific and medicinal purposes. The use of handcolouring adds an artistic touch, enhancing the beauty and accuracy of the illustration. Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's "Medicinal Plants" was a comprehensive work, documenting over 1,200 medicinal plants from around the world. The publication of such works was crucial during the colonial era, as they facilitated the exchange of knowledge between European and Asian medical traditions, leading to the discovery of new medicines and the development of herbal medicine. This lithograph is a testament to the rich cultural and botanical heritage of the Indian subcontinent and the importance of preserving traditional medicinal knowledge. It serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of different medical traditions and the ongoing quest for new discoveries in the realm of natural medicine.
