EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured lithograph, titled "Hawthorns and Brambles (As You Like It)" is a beautiful botanical illustration drawn and lithographed by the talented Jane Elizabeth Giraud, from the esteemed publication "The Flowers of Shakespeare," published by Day and Haghe in London in 1845. The illustration showcases the natural beauty of hawthorns and brambles, two plants that hold significant symbolism in Shakespeare's play "As You Like It." Hawthorns, also known as Mayflowers, are depicted in the foreground of the illustration, their delicate white blossoms contrasting against the deep green leaves. Hawthorns were believed to represent the joys of spring and were often associated with love and fertility. In "As You Like It," the character Rosalind uses the metaphor of a hawthorn bush to describe her love for Orlando, stating, "I will go tell him of his Rosalind. I will, I will. I will go tell him, and see how he will like it." Brambles, or blackberries, are depicted in the background of the illustration, their thorny stems intertwined with the hawthorns. Brambles were often used as a symbol of love's thorny and complex nature. In "As You Like It," the character Jaques famously laments, "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being seven ages." The illustration is further adorned with intricate calligraphy and a poetic verse from the play, adding to its artistic and literary value. The female artist, Jane Elizabeth Giraud, expertly captures the essence of both the plants and the play, making this a truly captivating work of art from the Victorian era.
