The illustration showcases the natural beauty of hawthorns and brambles, two plants that hold significant symbolism in Shakespeare's play "As You Like It." Hawthorns, also known as Mayflowers, are depicted in the foreground of the illustration, their delicate white blossoms contrasting against the deep green leaves. Hawthorns were believed to represent the joys of spring and were often associated with love and fertility. In "As You Like It," the character Rosalind uses the metaphor of a hawthorn bush to describe her love for Orlando, stating, "I will go tell him of his Rosalind. I will, I will.
