EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking copperplate engraving depicts Holy Roman Emperor Charles the Bald, also known as Carolus Calvus or Charles the Bald, who reigned from 840 to 877. Born in 823, Charles was the eldest son of Emperor Louis the Pious and his second wife, Irmengard of Hesbaye. After the division of the Carolingian Empire among Louis' sons, Charles became King of West Frankia and later King of Italy. Charles is shown in regal attire, wearing a crown adorned with precious stones and a cloak fastened with a brooch. He holds a scepter in his right hand and a dagger in his left, symbols of royal power and authority. A shield bearing the Caesars or Caesar's head, a common symbol of imperial power, is at his feet. Charles is often referred to as "Calvus," or "the Bald," due to his balding head, which contrasts with the full head of hair on his portrait's model, Emperor Louis the III, also known as Louis the Stammerer or Balbus. This confusion arose due to the reuse of the same model for multiple portraits. This engraving is from the 17th-century work "De Roomsche Monarchy," or "The Roman Monarchy," by Francois Salma and Abraham Bogaerts, published in Utrecht. The work is a comprehensive study of the history and monarchy of the Romans, with a focus on the Holy Roman Empire. The engraving serves as a visual representation of the imperial power and majesty of Charles the Bald during his reign.
