EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured engraving showcases the vibrant beauty of the Jamaican Toddy, Todus todus, also known as the Green Toddy or the Jamaican Flycatcher. The Toddy is a small, colorful bird native to the Caribbean islands, Central America, and northern South America. This particular illustration was created by the renowned English natural history artist, Charles Hamilton Smith, during his time in Jamaica in the early 19th century. The Toddy is a member of the flycatcher family, and its distinctive features include its bright green plumage, short, curved beak, and long, graduated tail. The bird's feathers have a metallic sheen, making it a striking sight among the lush greenery of its tropical habitat. The Toddy is an important species in the natural history of the Caribbean region. This illustration was published in "The Animal Kingdom" by the renowned French naturalist, Baron Georges Cuvier, in 1829. The work was translated and edited by Edward Griffiths and published in London by Whittaker. The publication of such detailed and accurate illustrations was essential for the advancement of zoological knowledge during the 19th century. The Toddy is an agile and skilled hunter, catching insects and other small prey in mid-air. It is also known to feed on fruit and nectar. The Toddy builds its nest in trees, often in colonies, and lays two to five eggs per clutch. This beautiful and intricately detailed handcoloured engraving is a testament to the natural history artistry of the 19th century and provides a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the Caribbean region.
