This black and white portrait captures Lady Violet Bonham-Carter, the influential Liberal politician and Governor of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), during the Liberal Assembly in 1946. Born Violet Asquith, she was the daughter of the former British Prime Minister, Herbert Henry Asquith, and a prominent figure in British politics in her own right. Lady Violet's political career began in earnest in the 1920s when she was elected as the Member of Parliament for Bath. She held this seat until 1950, becoming the first woman to represent the Liberal Party in the House of Commons. Her tenure was marked by her strong advocacy for women's rights and social reforms. In 1945, Lady Violet was appointed as the Governor of the BBC, making her the first woman to hold this position.
