EDITORS COMMENTS
Philippe II, Duke of Orleans (1674-1723), also known as Philippe duc d'Orléans and Regent of France, is depicted in this stunning handcoloured lithograph by Breton after a 1692 portrait from the gallery portfolio X 56 of Roger de Gaignières' "Historical Costumes of France." Born on August 2, 1674, Philippe was the eldest son of Philippe I, Duke of Orleans, and Henrietta Anne of England. He became Regent of France in 1715 upon the death of King Louis XIV, serving until his own death in 1723. During his regency, Philippe worked to maintain the peace and stability of the kingdom, navigating the complex political landscape of Europe. In this portrait, Philippe is shown in the full regalia of the French monarchy, wearing the Order of the Holy Spirit on his chest and the collar of the Order of the Garter around his neck, reflecting his dual heritage as a French prince and the Duke of Orléans, as well as his close relationship with England through his mother. The richly textured fabric of his robe and the intricate detailing of his hat and shoes demonstrate the opulence and grandeur of the French court during this period. The portrait is a testament to the artistic and cultural achievements of the Ancien Régime in France, and serves as a reminder of the complex political dynamics that shaped Europe during the early modern period. The handcoloured lithograph, produced by the Bibliophile Jacob and Paul Lacroix, captures the essence of this historical moment and the legacy of Philippe II, Duke of Orleans, who played a pivotal role in shaping the future of France and Europe.
