EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored steel engraving depicts the Piraya piranha, also known as the San Francisco piranha or saw-bellied salmon (Pygocentrus piraya), a fascinating and intriguing freshwater fish native to the rivers and watersheds of South America, particularly in the Guianas region. The Piraya piranha is a member of the Serrasalmidae family, and is characterized by its distinctive saw-like lower jaw, which is used for crushing the shells of mollusks and crustaceans, as well as for slicing through the flesh of larger prey. The Piraya piranha is not to be confused with the more notorious and larger red-bellied piranha (Pygocentrus nigro-guttatus), which is known for its aggressive schooling behavior and reputation as a man-eater. In contrast, the Piraya piranha is generally considered to be a less aggressive species, feeding primarily on mollusks, crustaceans, and smaller fish. This beautiful engraving was created by W.H. Lizars, based on an illustration by James Stewart, and was published as part of Robert Schomburgk's "Fishes of Guiana," which was published in Edinburgh in 1841 as part of Sir William Jardine's Naturalists Library: Ichthyology. The intricate details of the Piraya piranha's scales, fins, and other features are expertly rendered in this exquisite work of art, making it a valuable addition to any collection of natural history prints.
