EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait depicts Flavius Julius Constans Augustus, better known as Emperor Constans I, who ruled the Roman Empire from 337 to 350 AD. The image is taken from Abraham Bogaerts' "De Roomsche Monarchy," published in Utrecht in 1697. Constans I was the eldest son of Constantine the Great and brother of Constantius II and Constans II. He came to power after the death of his father, who divided the empire among his sons. Constans I is shown here in imperial regalia, wearing a diadem and a cloak fastened with a brooch. The emperor's portrait is rendered in meticulous detail through the technique of copperplate engraving, which was popular during the 17th century. The artist has captured the intense gaze and strong jawline of the emperor, conveying a sense of authority and power. Constans I faced numerous challenges during his reign, including rebellions and invasions. He was known for his military prowess and his ability to maintain peace and stability within the empire. The emperor also issued coins bearing his image, which served as a symbol of his power and authority. Despite the passage of time, this portrait of Constans I continues to captivate viewers with its intricate details and the glimpse it offers into the life of a Roman emperor. The image is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Roman Empire and the men who ruled it.
