EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Flavius Jovianus Augustus, also known as Emperor Jovian, who ruled the Roman Empire from 363 to 364 AD. The image is a copperplate engraving taken from "De Roomsche Monarchy," a comprehensive work on the Roman Monarchy published in Utrecht, Netherlands, in 1697 by Francois Salma. Abraham Bogaert, a renowned engraver, created this exquisite reproduction. Emperor Jovian, born in Illyricum, rose to power following the sudden death of Emperor Julian in 363 AD. He was a soldier by trade and became Emperor after a brief civil war. During his short reign, Jovian made significant decisions that impacted the Roman Empire. He reversed Emperor Julian's religious policies, returning the empire to Christianity, and secured the eastern frontier against the Sassanid Persians. The portrait showcases Jovian's regal demeanor and the grandeur of the Roman imperial court. He is depicted wearing a diadem, a traditional Roman crown, and a toga, the traditional Roman garment. The background is adorned with symbols of power, including a scepter and an orb. This portrait is an essential historical artifact, offering a glimpse into the classical world of the Roman Caesars and the Kaisers. It serves as a reminder of the rich history of the Roman Empire and the enduring influence of its leaders. The intricate details of the copperplate engraving capture the essence of the Roman imperial court, making it a valuable addition to any collection of historical art or classical antiquities.
