In this striking 17th-century copperplate engraving, Roman Emperor Valens is depicted in regal attire, solidifying his position as a powerful and respected leader of the Eastern Roman Empire. Valens, born Flavius Julius Valens, reigned from 364 to 378 AD, making him a significant figure during the late Roman period. Valens is shown here wearing the traditional imperial purple robe and diadem, symbols of his imperial power. His expression is serious yet confident, conveying the weight of responsibility that came with ruling the vast Roman Empire. Valens is also depicted holding a scepter in his right hand, further emphasizing his imperial authority. Valens is notable for his military achievements, particularly his victory against the Goths at the Battle of Adrianople in 378 AD. This victory, however, ultimately proved to be short-lived, as Valens himself was killed in the battle.
