EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the image of Flight-Lieutenant Ronald Victor Knight (1894-1917), a remarkable figure of sportsmanship and military valor during the First World War. Born on October 18, 1894, Knight was a man of diverse talents, excelling in both athletic pursuits and military service. Knight's athletic prowess was evident in his prowess on the cricket field, where he represented his school and later, the Old Harrovians cricket team. His cricketing skills earned him recognition and admiration from his peers and spectators alike. However, the call to duty came in 1915, and Knight answered it with unwavering courage and commitment. Enlisting in the Royal Flying Corps, Knight underwent rigorous training and was soon deployed to the front lines. His natural abilities and quick reflexes proved invaluable in the cockpit, and he quickly rose through the ranks, earning the distinction of Flight-Lieutenant. Sadly, Knight's military career was cut short on August 23, 1917, when he was killed in action during a reconnaissance mission over Belgium. His loss was deeply felt by his comrades and the cricket community, who mourned the loss of a talented sportsman and brave soldier. This photograph, taken in 1919, serves as a poignant reminder of Knight's life and legacy. It captures the essence of a man who embodied the spirit of sportsmanship and courage, both on and off the battlefield. Knight's name is etched in the annals of history, a testament to his unwavering commitment to duty and his enduring love for the game of cricket.
