EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts two exquisite and intriguing mushroom species: the Soap-scented Toadstool (Tricholoma saponaceum) and the Grey Knight (Tricholoma terreum). The image is a beautiful reproduction of an original illustration by A. Bessin, published in Leon Rolland's comprehensive guide to mushrooms from France, Switzerland, and Belgium, titled "Atlas des Champignons," published by Paul Klincksieck in Paris in 1910. The Soap-scented Toadstool, with its elegant, conical cap and white, waxy gills, is renowned for its distinctive, soap-like aroma, which is said to resemble the scent of goat's milk soap. This mushroom is a popular delicacy in some European countries, particularly in France, where it is known as "Beauce truffle" or "Belle de Bois." The Grey Knight, on the other hand, boasts a grayish-brown cap with a distinct, knight-like helmet-like appearance, and white, fibrous veil remnants on the stem. This mushroom is also known for its edible qualities, although it is less well-known than the Soap-scented Toadstool. The Grey Knight is a valuable addition to the mycophile's table, offering a nutty, slightly sweet flavor. This print, created by Lassus, showcases the intricate details and alluring beauty of these two mushroom species, transporting us to the enchanting world of mycology and fungi. The rich colors and meticulous attention to detail make this a true work of art, perfect for any nature lover, mushroom enthusiast, or collector.
