EDITORS COMMENTS
Thibault VIII de Neufchatel, Grand Maitre de France (1388-1459): A Nobleman of the Royal Court This stunning chromolithograph depicts Thibault VIII de Neufchatel, a prominent figure at the French royal court during the late Middle Ages. Born in 1388, Thibault rose to great prominence, eventually becoming Grand Maitre de France in 1435. This title, which roughly translates to Master of the Household, placed Thibault in charge of the king's household and personal affairs. The image captures Thibault in full regalia, wearing the distinctive livery of the Order of the Golden Fleece, which he was a member of. Founded by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in 1430, the Order of the Golden Fleece was one of the most prestigious and influential orders of chivalry in Europe during the 15th century. Thibault's membership in the order further solidified his position at the French court and in European nobility. The intricately detailed armorial design adorning Thibault's shield and surcoat reflects his noble lineage and status. The shield displays the arms of Neufchatel, a silver fleece on a red background, while the surcoat bears the arms of France, a golden fleur-de-lis on a blue background. The image also includes Thibault's motto, "Fort et Fideles," which translates to "Strong and Loyal." This chromolithograph is taken from Loredan Larchey's Ancien Armorial Equestre de la Toison d'Or et de l'Europe au 15e siecle (Ancient Equestrian Armorials of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Europe in the 15th century), published in Paris in 1890. The illustration is derived from an earlier manuscript, number 4790, housed in the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal. The meticulous attention to detail and vibrant colors of this print offer a captivating glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the French royal court during the late Middle Ages.
