EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the haunting beauty of the former Village School and Village Inn of West Tofts, located in Lynford, Norfolk. Once a thriving community, the village was sadly deserted by 1948 when it was taken over by the British Army as part of the Stanford Battle Area, an infantry training facility that remains in use today. The village and most of the parish are now within a prohibited area, making access a rare and privileged experience. The Village School, with its red-brick walls and tall chimney, stands proudly in the center of the image, while the Village Inn, or The Horse Shoes as it was once known, is visible to the right with its timber-framed structure and thatched roof. The image transports us back in time to a simpler era, where daily life revolved around the local school and inn. The Second World War brought about significant changes to this idyllic scene, as the British Army sought to establish a training ground for its infantry forces. The village, along with many others in the area, was deemed expendable in the name of national security. The people were evacuated, their homes and belongings left behind, and the village was swallowed up by the military complex. Today, the ghostly remains of West Tofts stand as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during wartime. The village may be abandoned, but its history lives on, preserved in the annals of time and in the memories of those who once called it home.
