EDITORS COMMENTS
This catalog illustration showcases an exquisite collection of ornaments, plates, tea and coffee sets, and a Chinese vase, donated during the late 1890s to aid the wounded and support the families of victims in the aftermath of war in the Middle East. The collection includes a 32. Ornate plate made in Berlin, bearing the imperial arms of the German Emperor and Empress in gold relief, a generous donation from the German Emperor himself. Number 33 is a Sevres ornament of a man playing a hunting horn, graciously donated by Monsieur Gabriel Hanotaux, the French Foreign Minister. The following items, 34 to 36, were all donated by high-ranking officials in the Ottoman Empire. The coffee set in enamelled gold, made in Turkey, was presented by the Grand Vizier, Halil Rifat Pasha. The porcelain tea set decorated with silver, also made in Turkey, was donated by Ali Riza Pasha, the Minister of War. Lastly, a Porcelain Sevres vase decorated with bronze gold was donated by the wife of Tahsin Bey, the First Secretary to the Sultan. The final item, 37, is an ancient Chinese vase, a thoughtful contribution from Zuhdi Pasha, the Minister of Public Instruction. This collection, illustrated in this chromolithograph, is a testament to the patronage and solidarity between various nations and individuals during a time of need. The intricate designs and ornate details of these items serve as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage that came together to support the aid efforts in the Middle East during the post-war era.
