EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the revered figure of Bishop Alfred Ollivant (1798-1882) of Llandaff. Born on March 1, 1798, in the picturesque village of Llangynidr, Wales, Ollivant was ordained a deacon in 1822 and a priest in 1823. He rose through the ranks of the Church of England, eventually becoming the Bishop of Llandaff in 1869. Ollivant's tenure as bishop was marked by his deep commitment to social justice and the welfare of the poor. He was a vocal advocate for education and established numerous schools in the diocese. He also worked tirelessly to improve the living conditions of the working class, speaking out against the harsh realities of poverty and advocating for reforms. Despite his progressive views, Ollivant was a traditionalist at heart. He was known for his strong faith and his deep connection to the ancient rituals and traditions of the Church. He was a popular figure in the community and was beloved by the people of Llandaff for his kindness, compassion, and unwavering dedication to his faith and his flock. This photograph, taken in the late 19th century, captures the essence of Bishop Ollivant's character - a man of deep faith, compassion, and commitment to social justice. His legacy continues to inspire generations, and his impact on the community of Llandaff is still felt to this day.
