EDITORS COMMENTS
September 7, 1838: A Moment of Heroism in the Treacherous Waters of the Farne Islands Amidst the rugged and unforgiving North Sea, off the coast of Northumberland, lies the picturesque yet perilous Farne Islands. This photograph captures a pivotal moment in the islands' history, as the Forfarshire, a paddle steamer, met its unfortunate fate on these treacherous waters. The Forfarshire, a passenger transport vessel, was en route from Leith to South Shields when it was wrecked on the rocks of the Farne Islands. The disaster occurred on a stormy autumn day in 1838, with the ship's crew and passengers left stranded in the churning waters. Amidst the chaos, lighthouse keeper Robert Darling and his 18-year-old daughter Grace sprang into action. With courage and determination, they rowed their small boat through the rough seas to reach the wreckage. Defying the elements, they managed to save nine lives that day, including those of women and children. Their heroic actions were a testament to their bravery and selflessness in the face of danger. This photograph, taken from a bygone era, serves as a poignant reminder of the raw power of nature and the indomitable human spirit. It also highlights the importance of the lighthouse keepers and their vital role in safeguarding the lives of seafarers and mariners. The Forfarshire shipwreck remains a significant part of the maritime history of the Farne Islands and Northumberland.
