EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment of the maiden flight of the first North American F-100D Super Sabre, military jet serial number 54-2121, on October 27, 1954. The F-100D was an advanced version of the North American F-100 Super Sabre, a supersonic jet fighter and fighter-bomber that served with the United States Air Force (USAF) and several other air forces around the world. The aircraft was designed as a replacement for the F-86 Sabre, which had been instrumental in the Korean War. Piloted by Dan Darnell, a test pilot from the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, the F-100D took off from the Edwards Air Force Base in California for its inaugural flight. The Super Sabre was the first production fighter in the USAF to exceed Mach 1 in level flight, making it a significant advancement in aviation technology. The F-100D was equipped with a new J57-P-3W engine, which provided more thrust and improved performance. It also featured an enlarged wing and a new tail design, which improved stability and maneuverability. The aircraft was also armed with six 20mm cannon and could carry various types of bombs and rockets. The successful maiden flight of the F-100D marked the beginning of a new era in military aviation, paving the way for the development of more advanced jet fighters and fighter-bombers. The North American F-100 Super Sabre remained in service with the USAF until the late 1970s and was used in various conflicts, including the Vietnam War. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity and innovation of the aviation industry and the brave pilots who pushed the boundaries of flight.
