EDITORS COMMENTS
Numancia: An Ancient Celtiberian Settlement Famous for its Resilient Stand Against the Roman Empire in Spain This evocative photograph captures the ruins of Numancia, an ancient Celtiberian settlement located near the city of Soria in Spain. The site, now a testament to the rich history of the Iberian Peninsula, was once a thriving Celtiberian city that gained notoriety during the Celtiberian Wars (75-133 BC) for its fierce resistance against the expanding Roman Empire. The ruins of Numancia, also known as Numantia, date back to the 4th century BC and were inhabited by the Celtiberian people, an Indo-European ethnic group. The city's strategic location on a rocky outcrop made it a formidable fortress, and its inhabitants were renowned for their military prowess. The Celtiberian Wars marked a significant turning point in the Roman conquest of the Iberian Peninsula. The most famous of these conflicts was the Siege of Numancia (133 BC), led by the Roman generals Scipio Aemilianus and Scipio Africanus. Despite being vastly outnumbered, the Numantians held out for over two years, refusing to surrender to the Romans. The siege ended with the eventual starvation of the defenders, but their heroic stand became the stuff of legend. Today, Numancia's ancient ruins continue to fascinate historians, archaeologists, and visitors alike. Excavations at the site have unearthed remains of temples, houses, and other structures, providing valuable insights into the daily life of the Celtiberian people. The age-old walls, still standing proudly, offer a glimpse into the past, reminding us of the rich history and cultural diversity of Europe.
