EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of bravery and determination during the chaotic aftermath of the Battle of Crete in World War II. Taken by Colonel David Sutherland, a member of the British Special Boat Service (SBS) and Special Air Service (SAS), the image shows passengers and chaperones making their daring escape on the 10-ton motor-boat The Porcupine. Col. Sutherland had previously taken part in a daring raid on the occupied Greek island of Rhodes and later participated in Operation Albumen, a successful mission that saw 29 German aircraft destroyed for the loss of only one officer. Amidst the chaos and uncertainty of the war, this photograph offers a glimpse into the courage and resilience of those involved. The women and children on board, along with their chaperones, are a poignant reminder of the human cost of conflict and the importance of protection and safety. The Aegean Sea, dotted with the wreckage of war, serves as a backdrop to their escape, highlighting the tenuous nature of their journey and the precarious balance between survival and danger. Colonel David Sutherland's photograph is a testament to the incredible stories of valor and sacrifice that unfolded during the Second World War. It is a powerful reminder of the human spirit and the lengths to which people will go to protect their loved ones and secure a future in the face of adversity.
