Eudicot Herbarium Paeonia Paeoniaceae Paeony Peony Saxifragales Specimen Angiospermae Corallina Dicot Dicotyledon Magnoliophyta

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning dried specimen of Paeonia corallina, or the Coralroot Peony, is a beautiful example of the intricacies and diversity of the plant kingdom. Originating from the steep slopes of Steep Aohimes, this peony was cultivated at Sedbury and collected on the 21st of May, 2006. Belonging to the Paeoniaceae family, which is part of the larger order Saxifragales, this flowering plant is an angiosperm, a type of seed-producing plant. More specifically, it is a eudicot, meaning it has two embryonic seeds, and is a member of the magnoliophyta division, which includes all flowering plants. The Coralroot Peony is a herbaceous perennial plant, characterized by its distinctive yellow, peony-like flowers. The dried specimen showcases the intricate details of its petals, which are arranged in a circular pattern around the central disc, and the prominent, dark stigma at the center. The Coralroot Peony derives its name from its coralloid roots, which form a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria, allowing the plant to thrive in nutrient-poor soils. The Coralroot Peony is not only a botanical marvel but also an important species within the Paeoniaceae family. Its unique characteristics and adaptations make it a valuable addition to any botanical collection or herbarium. This specimen, preserved in the museum herbarium, serves as a testament to the beauty and complexity of the natural world and the importance of documenting and preserving plant diversity.
