EDITORS COMMENTS
The Pergamon Altar, a grand masterpiece of Hellenistic art, stands as a testament to the cultural brilliance of ancient Pergamon in Asia Minor during the second century BC. Commissioned by Eumenes II Soter, this monumental structure was created by artists of the renowned Pergamon school, using marble and limestone as their primary materials. The altar's intricate design showcases the epic battle between the Olympian gods and the Titans, or Giants, in a scene known as Gigantomachy. On the west frieze, we find a captivating sequence of figures, starting from left to right. First, the Old Man of the Sea, Nereus, is depicted with his wife Doris, both in human form. Next, a giant is shown, towering above the others with a fearsome expression and a fishtail instead of legs. Oceanus, the god of the sea, and his consort Thetys follow, their bodies adorned with intricate detail and flowing drapery. The Pergamon Altar, now housed in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, Germany, is a remarkable example of the high artistic achievements of the Hellenistic period. Its Ionic order, with its elegant columns and colonnade, adds to the overall grandeur and beauty of this ancient artifact. The detailed relief work on the altar's surface brings the mythological battle between the gods and giants to life, offering a glimpse into the rich mythology and cultural heritage of ancient Greece.
