The XT-49 was an intriguing turboprop development of the Wright J65 engine, which was a license-built and developed Armstrong-Siddeley Sapphire. The J65 engine was rated at an impressive 10,400 shaft-horsepower. This powerful engine was installed to evaluate its potential for use in military aircraft, marking a departure from the jet engines that had become synonymous with the Stratojet series.
