EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the versatile and historic Chase XC-123A 47-787, a jet-powered assault transport and former prototype for the XCG-20 assault glider. The XC-123A, serial number 47-787, was initially ordered on December 2, 1946, as part of Project MX-879. The designation of this Chase Aircraft Corporation creation was initially MS-8, later changed to XG-20 on June 11, 1948. In its early life, 47-787 served as a prototype for the assault glider, but its potential was soon recognized, leading to its conversion into a jet-powered transport. After undergoing further modifications, it was reverted back to the C-123 standard. In another phase of its career, it was assigned two Pratt and Whitney R-2800 engines for boundary layer control trials, and was given a new serial number, 53-8068. The photograph, taken circa 1951, captures the XC-123A in its prime, embodying the spirit of innovation and progress that defined the aviation industry during the 1950s. This iconic aircraft, a testament to the ingenuity and adaptability of its designers and engineers, continues to be a fascinating subject for aviation enthusiasts and historians alike.
