This evocative photograph captures the sleek and imposing presence of Fleet Air Arm's Fairey Gannet T.5 XG886 (msn F9415) of 849 Naval Air Squadron Headquarters Flight, as it stands proudly at RAF Odiham in 1966. Delivered to RNAS Brawdy on the 4th of July, 1957, XG886 served with distinction in the Fleet Air Arm for over a decade. The Gannet, a British-designed maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft, was renowned for its versatility and capability in locating and destroying enemy submarines. In this image, the Gannet's distinctive shape and powerful engines are on full display, with the squadron's insignia proudly emblazoned on the fuselage. The aircraft's impressive size and the barren, open landscape of RAF Odiham create a sense of isolation and importance, reflecting the vital role the Gannet played in protecting the nation's maritime interests. Sadly, the end of XG886's service life came all too soon, and it was broken up for spares and reduced to produce at RNAS Brawdy on the 19th of May, 1970.
